Destiny Beckons
Celtic stand on the edge of another Champions League qualifier, and as supporters we know this territory all too well. These ties come with a familiar cocktail of hope, nerves, and memory. We’ve fallen at this hurdle in seven of our last nine attempts, often in situations where we had every reason to feel confident. This time, destiny stretches across two legs — two nights that will define our European season before it even begins.
LASK arrive as Austrian champions, and that alone demands respect. I won’t pretend to have deep knowledge of them, but champions of Austria are never to be underestimated. They’ll be organised, physical, and tactically drilled. They’ll believe they can hurt us both home and away.
Our own summer has been a mixture of promise and loss. We’ve made some genuinely astute signings who look capable of strengthening the first eleven. But we’ve also lost Maeda, our talismanic force of nature, and Engels, a young talent who was only beginning to bloom. Johnston’s injury adds another complication. It’s been a window of movement, but not without cost.
Even so, I believe a solid, disciplined performance in the first leg at home can set the tone. Celtic don’t need to dazzle; they need to control the game, manage the moments, and produce a result that can be defended in Austria. That’s entirely achievable if we approach it with clarity rather than chaos.
There’s always a huge amount at stake in these qualifiers — financially, emotionally, and in terms of reputation. And it’s never easy. We’ve shot ourselves in the foot too many times to take anything for granted. Last year, I had a nagging sense we might struggle against Kairat. This time, I’m quietly confident. The new attacking options give us a different dimension, and with Martin O’Neill at the helm, there’s a steadiness about the place that hasn’t been there in a while.
Two legs. Two nights. One opportunity to put Celtic back among Europe’s top-tier clubs. It won’t be simple, and it won’t be comfortable, but destiny is there to be grasped.
Hail Hail.
